Training System Overview
Training in Union Bank is a bank-wide responsibility managed centrally by the Apex Unit - Staff College, Bangalore - in close consultation with business units. There are 7 Staff Training Centres at Aluva (Kerala), Ahmedabad (Gujarat), Powai (Maharashtra), Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh), Bhubaneshwar (Orissa), Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) and Gurgaon (Delhi) ably supplementing the training efforts of Staff College, Bangalore.

A high-powered committee of top executives - Chairman, Executive Directors, General Managers - meets once in six months to review the training activities and provides directions for the way forward. The Principal of Staff College, Bangalore, is the Member-Secretary of this Committee.

The training in Union Bank has a history of 5 decades. As early as 1962, the Bank's Staff College was established at Bombay to take care of the training requirements. Initially there was only one channel. Now there are 20 channels with a capacity to train 524 persons at a time. Facilities provided for the trainees are holistic and both the class room and residential arrangements are uniform throughout. Opportunity to provide training for all the staff - from Housekeepers to Executives in the highest cadre - has been the objective of Union Bank's Training System.

All the training centres, including the mother unit at Bangalore are the Bank's own except one centre at Ahmedabad. The training programmes are run on residential type and the trainee is treated as the internal customer of the bank. The Bank also utilizes external training facilities offered by reputed organizations like NIBM, BTC, CAB, BIRD, RBI, MDI.

The training mission is to promote a culture of continuous learning for the development of the individual and the Bank to ensure that Union Bank is a learning organization.

Induction Level Programs, Programs on promotions, Reinforcement and re-skilling programmes, Management Education & Leadership Development Programmes, Programmes aimed at attitudinal changes and behavioural improvements are the highlights of training activities apart from workshops, conferences, seminars and symposia held at Regional Locations. A beginning has been made in Distance Learning via UBI-net and video conferencing.

Training in Union Bank is an evolution and a journey and is not seen as a specific destination.
